Paderborn Garrison in Germany Formerly Commended the Paderborn Branch of the Royal British Legion and its members for Services to the Armed Forces Community Paderborn-Sennelager, Germany, Monday June 6, 2011. Paderborn Branch received a formal Garrison Commander's Commendation from Bigadier Patrick Sanders DSO OBE, Commander 20 Armoured Brigade and Paderborn Garrison at the Volunteers' Reception in Epsom House Sennelager, Germany on June 6, 2011. It is an annual event which is held to thank groups and individuals who contribute to the welfare of the Armed Forces Community within the Garrison. John Hegarty received the commendation on behalf of the Branch. The Royal British Legion Paderborn Branch was formed in 1986. It works at the heart of the Garrison and ex-pat communities and has built a strong long lasting working relationship with the Garrison community. Its membership consists of both German and British citizens and approximately 30% of are serving soldiers. Many of its members are not entitled to benefits themselves but give up their free time voluntarily to help those who are less fortunate. During its 25 years, the Branch has raised approximately €500,000; provided financial welfare assistance to approximately 800 clients; Visited over 2000 patients in hospital; handled over 1500 claims for war pensions; and advised over 3000 clients. It has provided a service to the Community by running bi-annual car-boot sales, of which all proceeds go to the Poppy Appeal and weekly bingo. In addition it raises funds for the Poppy Appeal by organising prize draws selling poppies, and fun runs. The Branch played a major role in publicising the first British Forces (Germany) Veteran's Day organised by Paderborn Garrison in 1998. The Branch is one of 15 Branches in Germany not including the Women's Section.
