‘ Gob Smacking Gold’.
Gold Badge Citation. Simon Hogben joined the Paderborn Branch in 1997. He was an active member right from the start. He attends all meetings, Branch functions and fundraising events. He was Branch Secretary from 1998 - 2004. He designed the first branch web-site which was one of the first Legion web-sites within the district. He has recruited many new Legion members. He wrote a Legion Brief in German and has fostered relations with the local German community in addition to the British Forces Community within Paderborn Garrison. He never misses an opportunity to explain the Legion’s objects and values. He spends many hours at the local NAAFI in Sennelager raising funds at remembrance tide and promoting Legion events. He has written numerous articles that have appeared in the Legion Magazine, the local Garrison Magazine, the Sixth Sense Forces Newspaper and the local German press. He has been the Branch Treasurer since October 2004. During his tenure, he has managed the Branch accounts accurately and efficiently. The accounts are always submitted on time. One of the first control measures that he introduced was internet banking for the Branch, which increased efficiency and reduced the bank charges significantly. He was appointed as the District PR Officer in 2008 and remains in this post today. He has a passion for photography and uses his hobby to promote Legion activities to the general public. He was a driving force in helping to produce a posative BBC radio documentary about British citizens that have settled in Germany. During his membership, Simon has contributed to raising approximately € 450,000 for the Poppy Appeal. He puts effort into every task that he volunteers for. Last year he organised the Branch’s 25th Anniversary. He publicised the event using regular newsletters with Graphic illustrations to get the attention of the public. He used the same techniques to mark the Legion’s 90th Year. Simon is well known in the local community. He has photographed numerous Garrison remembrance parades, home coming parades for units returning from operations and many other community events. He had the privilege of presenting Op Telic medals to the 2nd Light Infantry when they returned from Iraq. In 2008, Simon was a key player in helping with the publicity for the first UK Veterans’ Day in Germany. Despite a personal health battle, Simon continues to be fully committed to the cause. The Paderborn Branch recommends simon Hogben for the award of the Gold Badge.
