Wageningen Liberation Day Parade 2013.
As a British citizen there is nothing more humbling than to be a part of Hollands Liberation Day Parade held at Wageningen on the 5th of May as an annual event. This particular visit by members of the Royal British Legion Paderborn Branch was made possible by the very kind offer of transport in the way of a nine seater Minibus provided by the 5 Rifles MT section and their MTO Capt Rob Paulter. Our selected driver Cpl  Steve Barret ( see photo) was at the branch premises bright and early and the three hour  journey to Wageningen began at 0730hrs. On arrival for those never having attended before the enormity of the whole event soon became apparent, with old timer military vehicles arriving, marching bands and the numerous amount of veterans associations both from Holland and its many wartime allies all being represented. Many military stands displayed their old time equipment from the Chaplains department through to the then battle tanks. Packed lunches were provided for those partaking in the day's events which culminated in a massive parade and march past stretching over a four kilometer route. The patriotism shown by the Dutch people both old and young really brings home the importance, values and respect they show to all the veterans from numerous nations taking part. They line the whole route in places up to ten deep clapping and cheering as the parade goes by. Words cannot explain the atmosphere and pride that you feel to be a part of what is truly a great day. The parade ended at around 1700hrs and we all returned safely in Paderborn shortly after 2100hrs a little tired but everyone agreed it was one of the best events they have ever attended.
